On Being Poor

I dislike the term poor.  Poor gets bandied about by so many people that it has lost most of its meaning by gaining so many other meanings.  To me being poor is a state of mind rather than the economic condition it once described.

Poor people or Po’ Peeps as some like to refer to themselves seem to think they are a minority group deserving special privileges garnered on other minorities.  Regardless of race, gender, or religion the Po’ Folkare a group in and of themselves who do like being economically impoverished.  This blog is not for them, they would just bitch and moan about how I pick on them when I should be standing with them.  That or they would tell me I am just an upity white guy trying to live well above my station and lord it over them.

For those of you who noticed I didn’t include sexuality in that list of Po’ Folk, there was a reason.  While there are poor and impoverished in the queer community, they are as a distinct group almost likely as neo-cons to be well educated and employed in higher paying jobs.  The first part of this would make those social conservatives stand up and cheer.  They weren’t having sex as teenagers, so most of them finished high school and went on to college without being saddled with kids.  Of course that is only sex by the most conservative of  definitions.  Despite what all the things social conservatives say about anal sex, fellatio, cunnilingus, masturbation,  etc none of that leads to getting knocked up.

I digress though this post is about the difference between being impoverished and being poor, not the difference between being straight and being gay.  Despite all my gay friends I have no idea what it is to be gay. When I look at hot women, every hormone in my body reminds me I’m most certainly not gay, no matter how much I used to spend on my hair care products.

Poor is a state of mind.  Impoverished is condition that anyone can find themselves in.  Before making a judgment call remember, for as often as good things seem to happen to the unworthy many more crappy things happen to good things.
